Miscellanies 7 - With God there is forgiveness
If the Lord kept a record of our sins that is of those who have been regenerated who would be able to stand? Who would be able to live out their Christian life in complete freedom? I know that with me because of my nature and weak disposition, I would fall and land like a man who falls of a high tower. But we see that God does not a keep a record of the sins of his saints for the psalmist writes ‘If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you’ psalm 130:3-4. Notice the middle and last part of these verses which reads ‘But with you there is forgiveness….so that we can with reverence serve you’. With God there is forgiveness and there is always forgiveness to all who turn to him with a broken and contrite heart. Forgiveness belongs to God and like a gift he loves to bestow it upon sinners. He does this so that we may revere his name, so that we may praise him as David said elsewhere ‘Have mercy on me Oh God.. restore to me the joy of your salvation… and my tongue will sing of your praise’. As long as the saint feels himself unforgiving by God then he is unlikely to declare God’s praises with joy but as soon as he feels the forgiveness of God then the saint is likely to rise in fact the saint will rise with great joy to dance and sing the praises of His God. God loves to forgive and He has demonstrated this ultimately in the death of His Son. All who turn to His Son will be pardon of their iniquities. Jesus will pardon their sins and heal their brokenness. With God there is forgiveness and if you feel yourself burden with guilt remember that with God there is forgiveness.

On Eternal Punishment
The NT doesn’t put forward eternal punishment of the wicked as a doctrine to be defended because it casts suspicion on God’s justice and love. To the contrary, the NT puts forward eternal punishment as right, even obviously right. It wouldn’t be right of God not to punish the wicked, so that the doctrine supports rather than subverts his justice and love. It shows that he keeps faith with the righteous, that he loves them enough to vindicate them, that he rules according to moral and religious standards that really count, that moral and religious behavior has consequences, that wickedness gets punished as well as righteousness rewarded, and that the eternality of punishment as well as of reward invests the moral and religious behavior of human beings with ultimate significance. We’re not playing games. In short, the doctrine of eternal punishment defends God’s justice and love and supplies an answer to the problem of moral and religious evil rather than contributing to the problem.
God will finally rectify all the imbalances in the scales of justice. To biblical people no mystery attached to this rectification, as though to say we can’t understand it now—how it could be right for God to punish the wicked eternally—but at the Last Day we’ll recognize his love and justice in punishing them eternally and rewarding the righteous, also eternally. To biblical people it was already clear that by so doing, God will be exercising his love and justice. And it was already clear to them because they had an acute, firsthand awareness of the depth of human depravity, on the one hand, and of the pain of man’s inhumanity to man, on the other hand. Often, moderns think that if only biblical people hadn’t been so insular, if only they’d lived in the times of radio, television, the Internet, international travel, if only they’d been personally acquainted with people of other religions—some Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims—they wouldn’t have come up with the horrible idea of eternal punishment. But the doctrine of divine inspiration of Scripture aside (though it warrants acceptance), biblical people were probably less insular than we moderns are. Most of them had closer and more numerous contacts with people of other religions then we do. As to most of the people we Christians in the Western world deal with, if they aren’t Christians they’ve at least been deeply influenced by the side-effects of the Christian faith that have permeated our culture. But biblical people rubbed shoulders daily with those who diligently practiced other religions, usually a variety of other religions at the same time. They knew what those other religions were and what effects they had on people. So maybe the problem we modern Westerners feel in regard to the doctrine of eternal punishment arises out of our comparative insularity, not out of the insularity of those who wrote the Bible, to our relative ignorance of the realities of human nature, other religions, and their effects on human behavior. At any rate, it’s simply wrong to attribute the doctrine to unfamiliarity with other religions and their devotees.
To reference the righteous and the wicked in this discussion isn’t to imply that people gain eternal life or suffer eternal punishment on the basis of whether their conduct is, on the whole, good or bad. Thinking that they do is probably part of the problem modern Westerners have in accepting the Bible’s teaching of eternal punishment: Non-Christians often seem to be good people. Why should they be punished forever? But people’s conduct isn’t necessarily an accurate gauge of whether their nature is good or bad. Relatively good conduct can be the accidental effect of a good environment in family, friends, teachers, and the surrounding general culture. Put supposedly good people in another set of circumstances—a set in which they can do what they jolly well please, for example, or in which they’re subject to greater temptation—and they may turn into Hitlers. Take Nero. At first, when still under the influence of the Stoic philosopher Seneca, Nero was a fairly good Roman emperor. After Seneca died, though, Nero turned demonic. We just don’t know people’s hearts, or even our own hearts, as God knows them (Jer 17:9–10). People don’t go to heaven because their conduct is good enough. They don’t go to hell because their conduct is too bad, but because they themselves are bad whether or not that fact has come out very clearly in their conduct. Our conduct and our eternal fate aren’t related directly to each other as cause and effect. They’re both the effect of whether or not we’ve been born from above through faith in Jesus Christ and the action of God’s Spirit. What our conduct does determine, however, is the degree to which we enjoy eternal life or suffer eternal punishment (see, e.g., Luke 12:47–48; 1 Cor 3:10–15). Though purely enjoyable, heaven won’t be equallyenjoyable for everybody there. Similarly, hell won’t be equally torturous for everybody there, and not so torturous as to impugn God’s justice—yet torturous enough to be avoided at all costs.

The Fragrance of Christ
Paul writes these amazing words in 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 ‘For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life’.
If you are a Christian that is if you have been regenerated and have the Spirit of God living and sealed inside of you then you are the aroma of Christ to God. You are indeed a sweet smelling aroma to God and He loves to smell you because it is pleasing to His soul. Genesis 8:21 ‘And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth”. If God will never again curse the ground because of man when he smelled the aroma of bulls and goats, how much more will His favour and tender Love be upon you when He constantly smells the aroma of Christ emanating from you? A Christian has no grounds to ever doubt God’s love for them or to think in anyway that God is against them. For you are to Him the aroma of Christ, the sweet incense and fragrance which arises to his Holy Temple and make glad His heart. Christ is the delight of His Father, in fact Christ is His infinite delight and from all eternity the stream of love flowed fully never lacking in substance or affection. And we read Christ himself say when He became a Man ‘My Father Loves me because I lay down my life’. And when He bore the wrath of His Father because of your wretched sins, God loved Him so much that it was perfectly amiable and agreeable to His nature to raise Him from the dead.
When a man enters a room with a horrible stench, would he be content to stay in the room let alone continue his business without dissatisfaction. But a man who enters a room with a sweet odour would immediately breathe an intake of the soothing fragrance which excites his soul. Likewise we could never be a filthy stench to God although we once were when we were dead in our sins and trespasses but now we have been grafted in, we have been united with Christ and are whole identity is Christ. We have entirely been covered by His garment, His skin is now our skin so that the fragrance which springs out from us is entirely Christ’s.
We have a picture of this in the Old testament, that inspired word which testifies of Christ your beloved. We see in the story of how Jacob inherited His Father’s blessing by acquiring the right of the firstborn from His godless brother Esau. Although Jacob purchased the right from Esau, yet, He needed to convince his Father to bless him with those rights. In order to execute his mission, we are told that ‘Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck…. Jacob approached His Father…and then Isaac said to Jacob “Please come near that I may feel you my son”… and he did not recognise him, because his hands were hairy like Esau… and Isaac smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him’ Gen 27. In like manner we are all like Jacob, undeserving of the blessing of our Father, but because God is rich in mercy he clothes us in the righteousness of Jesus Christ so as to rid us of the filthy stench of sin and instead we are a smooth smelling aroma which the righteousness of Christ yields on our behalf. Because you are in Christ Jesus, you are a smooth smelling pleasing aroma to God your Father who has blessed you with all of the spiritual blessings in the heavenly places and made you co-heirs with Christ. Is this not a delightful truth, that right now regardless of your condition or situation that you are the aroma of Christ to God.
As well as constantly and for all eternity being a sweet smelling fragrance to God we are to some of our fellow men the fragrance of death to death and to those who are being saved we are the fragrance of Life to life. ‘Who is sufficient for these things?’ the apostle asks. But God makes us sufficient. To belong to Christ will naturally bring you into His Kingdom and separate you from the kingdom of darkness. When Christ walked this earth, to some He was the fragrance of life and peace ‘And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace’ John 1. And to some he was the fragrance of death ‘And this is the judgement: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For every one who does wicked things hates the light’ John 3. These are those who are perishing from death to death and the presence of Christ only increases their depravity unto that final death where it becomes irrevocable to be transformed. And to those who are being saved, the presence of Christ brought about humble contrition of heart and submission and a recognition of His universal sovereignty and a wilful decision to receive from him and to live their lives for Him. This was the influence of Christ upon the world and because He lives in us and we are clothed in Him our lives will and should reflect His.
To some my dear saint you will be life unto life and to some you will be death unto death. To those who are being saved that is those whom the Spirit of Christ have begun to work upon will smell that sweet fragrance which the Spirit of grace has been familiar with since all eternity and immediately their hearts will spring to life accepting the gospel of grace and submitting to the reign of Christ their king. But to those who are self seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, the gospel of Christ will be death to them and willingly they will reject that which alone can save them. The same Christian as an influence of life and death. To all peoples we are to constantly be of that Spirit of love in spraying the sweet aroma of Christ, displaying those glorious fruits of the Spirit so that to all we are good ambassadors of Christ Jesus, not defiling his name through wickedness but through holiness rightly reflecting that which lives in us. And as we live and love, let men conclude what they may and let them smell Christ as they may, to some we shall be life unto life and to others death unto death; but to God our Father we are always the pleasing aroma of Christ which rises to his nostrils and causes His heart to rejoice and dance over us.

Grant me a dream
Oh My Lord, will you please grant me a dream. Will you today begin to direct my steps and lead me through the path you walked. Here I am with a frustrated heart for I wish to do more for your kingdom cause. I lack a dream and I know not which roads to walk. Oh My God here I am to do your will, to die and live entirely for thee. I know my sins and with tears I plea that I may forsake them for it is all I see which is crippling me. Enable upon me once again like Samson to restore my strength, bid my hands upon the high towers of evil to fall them down. Allow me grace from now till I die to live and love and seek the best for my fellow men. Let me release all of me for the advancement of your Kingdom Love. I cannot be settled until I see your fragrance spread through my feeble life. Use me oh Lord is my heart’s cry and kill with passion all the pride that dwells inside. Let my boast be of you crucified let my message bring the reconciliation that your Father Loves. Grant me a dream oh Lord.
